Student Loan Repayment Calculator with Grace Period

Work out in euros the monthly payment during your studies (partial or full grace period, interest capitalized yearly), the payment after graduation and the total cost of interest and insurance.

Student loan: monthly payments during and after your studies

During a partial deferment, you pay interest and insurance every month; the principal is then repaid in equal instalments. For €25,000 at 2.2% with 3 years of study followed by 5 years of repayment, the tool shows €53.13 a month while studying, €447.68 afterwards and a total cost of €3,773 (interest and insurance).

The formulas

  • Monthly insurance = principal × insurance rate / 12, paid over the whole term.
  • Partial deferment: study-period payment = principal × rate / 12 + insurance; the principal stays the same.
  • Full deferment: only insurance is paid; interest is added to the principal once a year.
  • Repayment: M = C × r / (1 − (1 + r)−n), with r = rate / 12 and n = term in months, plus insurance.

Default example

€25,000 at 2.2%, 0.35% insurance, 3-year partial deferment then 5 years of repayment:

  • while studying: €53.13 a month (€45.83 interest and €7.29 insurance), €1,650 of interest over 36 months;
  • after graduation: €447.68 a month for 60 months, including €7.29 insurance, with €1,423 of interest;
  • total cost: €3,073 of interest + €700 of insurance = €3,773, i.e. €28,773 repaid.

Assumptions and limits

This page helps you plan your budget month by month; the other student loan simulator focuses on the cost of a full deferment. The rate is fixed, insurance is based on the initial principal and no arrangement fee is counted. Amounts are shown in euros. The default rate and insurance are examples to replace with those of your loan offer. This is an estimate and does not replace the bank's amortisation schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Full or partial deferment: which costs less?

Partial deferment, because interest is paid as it accrues and does not earn interest itself. For €25,000 at 2.2% with 3 years of study the gap is small (€3,906 against €3,773); at 4% with 5 years of study it reaches €1,581.

How much does my balance grow during a full deferment?

The tool applies (1 + rate) once per study year. At 2.2% over 3 years, €25,000 becomes 25,000 × 1.022³ = €26,687; at 4% over 5 years it becomes €30,416.

Does this simulator handle US federal repayment plans?

No. It calculates a fixed-rate loan with deferment, like a bank student loan, and shows amounts in euros. Income-driven plans, loan forgiveness and avalanche or snowball strategies are not modelled.

How much do I pay each month while studying with a partial deferment?

The month's interest plus insurance. For €25,000 at 2.2% with 0.35% insurance: 25,000 × 2.2% / 12 = €45.83 interest and €7.29 insurance, i.e. €53.13 a month after rounding.

What will my monthly payment be after graduation?

It depends on the remaining principal, the rate and the term you choose. With €25,000 at 2.2% repaid over 5 years, the tool gives €447.68 a month including insurance; over 7 years the payment falls but interest rises.

Is student loan insurance expensive?

In the tool it is based on the initial principal and paid over the whole term: 0.35% of €25,000 gives €7.29 a month, €700 over 8 years. That is close to a fifth of the €3,773 total cost in the example.
