Video Bitrate Calculator: File Size from 1080p to 8K

10 minutes at 8 Mbps is about 600 MB of video. Pick codec, resolution, frame rate and length to get the bitrate and the file size, audio included.

Video file size by codec, resolution and duration

Size (MB) = (video bitrate + 0.32 Mbps of audio) × duration in seconds ÷ 8. The tool takes the bitrate from a codec × resolution grid (for example 45 Mbps for H.264 4K, 25 Mbps for H.265 4K) and multiplies it by 1.4 at 60 fps or 2.2 at 120 fps (ProRes in proportion to the frame rate). Ten minutes of 4K at 60 fps in H.264 therefore weigh about 4.7 GB.

Bitrate grid (Mbps, 24 or 30 fps)

Codec1080p4K8K
H.2641245120
H.26572575
AV151850
ProRes1475032,000

The bitrate is multiplied by 1.4 at 60 fps and by 2.2 at 120 fps, then rounded. ProRes, an intra-frame codec whose grid is given at 30 fps, follows the frame rate: × 0.8 at 24, × 2 at 60 and × 4 at 120 fps. A custom bitrate above 0 replaces the grid. Audio adds 0.32 Mbps. Size (MB) = total bitrate × seconds ÷ 8; size (GB) = MB ÷ 1,000; upload time = megabits ÷ 50 (50 Mbps upstream fibre).

Example

4K, 60 fps, H.264, 10 minutes: 45 × 1.4 = 63 Mbps, plus 0.32 = 63.32 Mbps. 63.32 × 600 = 37,992 megabits, i.e. 4,749 MB or 4.75 GB, and 760 s (12 min 40 s) to upload. The same shoot in 1080p at 30 fps in H.265 over 20 minutes: 7.32 Mbps, 1,098 MB, 2 min 56 s upload.

Limits

  • A variable-bitrate encoder makes heavier or lighter files depending on motion; the result is an order of magnitude.
  • This tool is meant for long exports (masters, archives, YouTube uploads); for a short clip tuned to one social network, use the social media video bitrate and specs calculator.

Sources and dates: YouTube's recommended upload encoding settings give 8 Mbps (1080p, 24-30 fps), 35 to 45 Mbps (4K, 24-30 fps) and 53 to 68 Mbps (4K, 48-60 fps). The 63 Mbps computed for 4K at 60 fps in H.264 falls inside that range; the 12 Mbps used for 1080p is above it. ProRes, H.265, AV1 and 8K bitrates are the tool's indicative values, not verified (checked on 14/10/2026).

Frequently Asked Questions

How big is a 10-minute 4K video?

In H.264 at 60 fps, the tool uses 63 Mbps plus 0.32 Mbps of audio: about 4,749 MB, or 4.75 GB. At 30 fps (45 Mbps), the same file weighs about 3.4 GB.

H.265 or H.264: how much space do I save?

In the tool's grid, H.265 uses 25 Mbps in 4K against 45 Mbps for H.264, a file about 44% smaller for a comparable target quality. AV1 goes down to 18 Mbps.

How long does it take to upload a 5 GB video?

On a 50 Mbps upstream connection, as in the tool: 5 GB is 40,000 megabits, so 800 seconds (13 min 20 s), not counting network slowdowns.

What bitrate should I use for 4K 60 fps on YouTube?

YouTube recommends 53 to 68 Mbps for 4K SDR at 48-60 fps. The tool's H.264 calculation gives 63 Mbps, within that range.
