Orchard & Vineyard Planting Density & Trellising Calculator

Calculate plants per hectare, total rootstocks required, row linear meters, and trellising wire lengths for vineyards and fruit orchards.

Vineyard and orchard planting density: plants per hectare, trellis

Plants per hectare = 10,000 ÷ (row spacing × in-row spacing). A vineyard planted at 2.5 m × 1 m has 4,000 vines/ha in theory; after 8% headlands, a 4.5 ha plot takes 16,560 plants, 16.6 km of rows and 49.7 km of wire for a 3-wire trellis.

How it is calculated

  • Area per plant = row spacing × in-row spacing (m²).
  • Theoretical density = 10,000 ÷ area per plant; net density = density × (1 − headland share).
  • Usable area = area × (1 − headlands); plants = usable area in m² ÷ area per plant.
  • Row length = usable area ÷ row spacing; wire = length × number of wires.
  • Line posts: one every 5 m of row.
  • Plant cost = number × unit price, then divided by the plot's hectares.

Worked example

4.5 ha vineyard at 2.5 m × 1 m, 8% headlands, 3 wires, plants at €2.80: 2.5 m² per vine, 4,000 vines/ha in theory, 3,680 net. Usable area 41,400 m², so 16,560 plants, 16,560 m of rows, 49,680 m of wire and 3,312 posts. Plants: €46,368, or €10,304 per hectare.

The tool's benchmarks: vineyards 1.5 to 2.5 m between rows and 0.9 to 1.2 m in the row; orchards 4 to 6 m between rows and 2 to 4 m in the row.

Limits

The calculation assumes a rectangular layout and does not adjust for a staggered (quincunx) pattern. End posts, anchors and tensioners are not counted, nor the wire lost at row ends. Under a protected designation of origin, the specification often sets a minimum density and maximum spacings: check your appellation's rules before planting.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate the number of vines per hectare?

Divide 10,000 m² by the area taken by one vine, i.e. row spacing × in-row spacing. At 2.5 m × 1 m you get 4,000 vines/ha; at 1.5 m × 1 m, 6,667 vines/ha.

How many metres of wire does a vineyard trellis need?

Row length × number of wires. The tool gets row length by dividing the usable area by the row spacing: 41,400 m² at 2.5 m gives 16,560 m of rows, or 49,680 m of wire for 3 wires.

Why deduct headlands?

Row ends and access lanes are not planted. With 8% headlands, the tool lowers density from 4,000 to 3,680 vines per hectare of plot, and a 4.5 ha plot takes 16,560 plants instead of 18,000.

How many posts does a trellis need?

The tool counts one line post every 5 m of row: 16,560 m of rows need 3,312 posts. End posts and anchors come on top at each row end.
