5e character sheet: point buy, modifiers, HP and skills
Build a 5e character sheet from the SRD 5.2.1: point buy or standard array, modifiers, proficiency, saving throws, skills, hit points, AC and a PDF export.
Building a 5e character: ability scores, proficiency and HP
An ability modifier is (score − 10) ÷ 2, rounded down: 17 gives +3 and 8 gives −1. The proficiency bonus rises from +2 at level 1 to +6 at level 17, and level 1 hit points equal the class's maximum hit die plus the Constitution modifier.
Rules applied (SRD 5.2.1)
- Point buy: 27 points, scores 8 to 15; costs 8 = 0, 9 = 1, 10 = 2, 11 = 3, 12 = 4, 13 = 5, 14 = 7, 15 = 9.
- Standard array: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8, with the suggested placement for each class.
- Background: +2 and +1, or +1 to three abilities, never above 20.
- Proficiency: +2 (levels 1 to 4) up to +6 (17 to 20), added to proficient saves and skills.
- Hit points: maximum hit die + Con at level 1, then a fixed value per level (7, 6, 5 or 4 by class) + Con, at least 1.
- Unarmored AC: 10 + Dex; barbarian + Con; monk + Wis.
Worked example
Level 1 fighter, suggested array (Str 15, Dex 14, Con 13, Int 8, Wis 10, Cha 12) and background Str +2, Con +1: Str 17 (+3), Dex 14 (+2), Con 14 (+2), Int 8 (−1). HP: 10 + 2 = 12. AC: 10 + 2 = 12. Proficient saves: Str +5, Con +4. Athletics +5, passive Perception 12. At level 5: 12 + 4 × (6 + 2) = 44 HP, proficiency +3.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does point buy work in 5e?
You have 27 points and every ability starts at 8. Raising a score to 13 costs 5 points, to 14 costs 7 and to 15 costs 9. Three scores of 15 and three of 8 use exactly the 27 points.
How do you calculate an ability modifier?
Subtract 10 from the score, divide by 2 and round down. 17 gives +3, 10 and 11 give +0, 8 gives −1, and 20, a character's maximum, gives +5.
How many hit points at level 1?
The class's maximum hit die plus your Constitution modifier: 12 for a barbarian, 10 for a fighter, paladin or ranger, 8 for most other classes and 6 for a sorcerer or wizard. A fighter with Con 14 therefore has 12 HP.
What is the proficiency bonus by level?
+2 at levels 1 to 4, +3 at 5 to 8, +4 at 9 to 12, +5 at 13 to 16 and +6 at 17 to 20. It is added to proficient saving throws and skills, attacks and spell save DCs.
