Currency Converter with Daily Reference Exchange Rates

Enter an amount and two currencies to convert it at the published reference rate, updated every business day.

Where the converter's exchange rates come from and how to read them

The converter multiplies your amount by the exchange rate between the two chosen currencies: converted amount = amount × rate. The rates come from a public reference-rate service, usually updated once per business day: they are neither a real-time quote nor the rate your bank will apply.

How it works

Whenever you change the amount or a currency, the tool queries the public Frankfurter service, historically fed by the European Central Bank's reference rates. If that service does not respond, it falls back on the open.er-api.com API. The rate is cached for one hour in your browser. The tool shows the rate to four decimals (1 EUR = x USD), the result to two decimals and the update date supplied by the service. The swap button reverses the two currencies.

Example

With an illustrative rate of 1 EUR = 1.0850 USD, €100 gives 100 × 1.0850 = $108.50. The other way round, the rate becomes 1 / 1.0850 ≈ 0.9217, so $100 is worth about €92.17. If your bank takes a 2% exchange margin, you will only receive 108.50 × 0.98 ≈ $106.33.

Limits

  • Ten currencies: euro, US dollar, pound sterling, yen, Swiss franc, Canadian and Australian dollars, yuan, Indian rupee and Brazilian real.
  • Reference rates are usually published on business days only: at weekends the last published rate generally stays on screen.
  • This reference rate is for information; banks, payment cards and bureaux de change add a margin or fees.

Sources and dates: European Central Bank euro reference rates, the original source of the Frankfurter service, published every working day at around 16:00 CET since 1 July 2016, for information purposes, set through the daily concertation procedure between central banks at around 14:10 CET. Frequently Asked Questions

Is the rate shown the one my bank will use?

No. The tool shows a reference rate published for information. Your bank, card or bureau de change adds a margin or a fee: with a 2% margin, €100 converted at 1.0850 gives $106.33 instead of $108.50.

When are the exchange rates updated?

Reference rates are usually refreshed once per business day; the ECB's, the original source of the Frankfurter service used by the tool, appear at around 16:00 Central European Time. The tool keeps the rate in your browser for one hour, then fetches it again. The date shown under the result is the one supplied by the rate service.

Why doesn't the rate change at the weekend?

Reference rates, like the ECB's, are only published on business days. At weekends the service therefore generally returns the last published rate, often Friday's. Currency markets themselves keep moving slightly.

How do I convert in the other direction?

Use the swap button between the two currencies: the tool loads the matching rate. Mathematically, the reverse rate is 1 divided by the direct rate: if 1 EUR = 1.0850 USD, then 1 USD ≈ 0.9217 EUR, and $100 is worth about €92.17.
