French VAT Calculator: Net to Gross and Gross to Net

Enter a net or gross amount and a rate (20%, 10%, 5.5% or 2.1%) to get net, VAT and gross amounts to the cent.

How to calculate VAT: from net to gross price and back

To go from a net amount to a VAT-inclusive price, multiply by (1 + rate); to go back, divide the gross price by the same factor, 1.20 at the French standard rate of 20%. The tool shows the net amount, the VAT and the gross price rounded to the cent, with the four French rates as shortcuts and a free field for any other rate.

The formulas

  • Net to gross: VAT = net × rate ÷ 100, then gross = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100).
  • Gross to net: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100), then VAT = gross − net.

Taking 20% off a VAT-inclusive price is a common mistake: 120 × 0.80 = 96, whereas the net price is 120 ÷ 1.20 = 100. The VAT inside a gross price equals gross × rate ÷ (100 + rate), one sixth of the price at 20%.

Examples

  • 100 net at 20%: 20 of VAT, 120 gross (the tool's defaults).
  • 1,000 gross at 10%: 909.09 net and 90.91 of VAT.
  • 50 gross at 5.5%: 47.39 net and 2.61 of VAT.

The preset rates (France)

  • 20%: standard rate, most goods and services.
  • 10%: restaurants, accommodation, passenger transport, home improvement work, non-reimbursed medicines.
  • 5.5%: food, sanitary products, equipment for disabled people, energy-efficiency renovation.
  • 2.1%: mainly medicines reimbursed by French social security.

Electricity and gas standing charges, formerly at 5.5%, have been taxed at 20% since 1 August 2025. For French overseas departments (8.5% in Guadeloupe, Martinique and Réunion) or another country, type the rate in the free field. The tool handles one rate per calculation, so an invoice with several rates is worked out line by line.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to calculate price including VAT (TTC) from net (HT)?

Gross Amount = Net Amount x (1 + (VAT Rate / 100)). For example at 20%: Net x 1.2.

How to calculate net price (HT) from price including VAT (TTC)?

Net Amount = Gross Amount / (1 + (VAT Rate / 100)). For example at 20%: Gross / 1.2.

How do I find the VAT included in a gross price?

VAT = gross × rate ÷ (100 + rate). At 20%, VAT is one sixth of the gross price: 20 out of 120. Taking 20% of the gross price (24) overstates the tax.

Four rates in mainland France: 20% (standard), 10% (restaurants, accommodation, transport, building work), 5.5% (food, sanitary products, energy-efficiency work) and 2.1% (reimbursed medicines). Since 1 August 2025, electricity and gas standing charges have moved from 5.5% to 20%. In Guadeloupe, Martinique and Réunion the standard rate is 8.5%.
