Real Hourly Wage Calculator: Commute, Unpaid Hours, Costs

Uncover your true take-home hourly wage after factoring in commute time, off-the-clock overtime, and out-of-pocket work expenses.

Real hourly wage: commute, unpaid hours and work expenses

Your real hourly wage divides annual net pay, minus the costs your job forces on you, by every hour you give to work: contract hours, unpaid overtime, commuting and preparation time. With the default values, a €2,800 net monthly salary drops from €20.43 to €13.77 an hour, 32.6% less.

Formulas used

  • Contract rate = monthly net salary × 12 ÷ (contract weekly hours × weeks worked).
  • Real weekly hours = contract hours + unpaid overtime + (round-trip commute in minutes × office days ÷ 60) + (preparation minutes × office days ÷ 60).
  • Real income = annual net − 12 × (transport + extra lunch cost + clothing or childcare) per month.
  • Real rate = real income ÷ (real weekly hours × weeks worked).
  • Equivalent freelance day rate = annual net × 1.85 ÷ 210 days.

Example (default values)

€2,800 net a month, 35 hours, 47 weeks (52 minus 5 weeks of leave), a 75-minute round trip 4 days a week, 4 unpaid overtime hours, 30 minutes of preparation per office day, €140 transport, €120 lunches and €60 clothing or childcare a month. Contract rate: €33,600 ÷ 1,645 h = €20.43. Real week: 35 + 4 + 5 + 2 = 46 h, i.e. 2,162 h a year. Real income: 33,600 − 3,840 = €29,760. Real rate: €13.77 an hour, 32.6% less. Commuting takes 235 h a year, 9.8 full 24-hour days. Equivalent day rate: €296.

Assumptions and limits

  • The salary is used as entered: enter net pay after income tax withholding to measure what you actually receive.
  • The 1.85 factor and 210 billable days are rough figures chosen by the tool for a freelancer’s social charges, costs and unbilled time, not an official scale.
  • Deduct any employer reimbursement (transit pass, meal vouchers) from the costs you enter, or the real rate will be understated.

This tool measures the value of your time as an employee; the gross-to-net calculator estimates take-home pay and the raise simulator works out the employer’s cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my real net hourly wage?

Subtract the costs your job forces on you (transport, lunches, childcare) from annual net pay, then divide by every hour spent on work: contract hours, unpaid overtime, commuting and preparation. With €2,800 net a month, 46 real hours a week and €3,840 of costs a year, the rate drops from €20.43 to €13.77 an hour.

How many hours a year does my commute take?

The tool multiplies the round-trip time by office days per week and by weeks worked. 75 minutes a day, 4 days a week over 47 weeks gives 235 hours a year, or 9.8 full 24-hour days.

How does the tool work out the equivalent freelance day rate?

It multiplies your annual net salary by 1.85 and divides by 210 billable days: €33,600 net gives €296 a day. The 1.85 factor is the tool’s assumption for a freelancer’s social charges and costs, not an official scale.

Should I enter net salary before or after income tax?

The tool uses the amount you enter unchanged. To measure what you really earn per hour, enter net pay after tax withholding; to compare with a job offer, use pre-tax net on both sides.
