Funding training with France's CPF: out-of-pocket cost and payback
The out-of-pocket cost is training price + exam fee − (CPF balance + employer top-up + OPCO aid + France Travail aid). For a 3,550 cost and 2,850 of funding, 700 remains to pay, recovered in 2.6 months by a 350 gross raise (266 net in the tool's assumption). The CPF is the French personal training account.
The formula
Total cost = training price + exam fee. Funding = sum of the aids, capped at the total cost. Out-of-pocket = total cost − funding. Net monthly gain = gross raise × 0.76, a fixed ratio the tool uses to approximate contributions and income tax. Payback period = out-of-pocket ÷ net monthly gain; 3-year profit = net gain × 36 − out-of-pocket.
Worked example
A 3,200 course and a 350 exam (3,550, or 50.7 per hour over 70 hours), a CPF balance of 1,850 and an employer top-up of 1,000: 2,850 funded (80%), 700 left to pay. A 350 gross raise gives 266 net a month, which repays the outlay in 2.6 months and leaves 8,876 over 3 years.
The 150 flat contribution
Under French rules, a holder who uses the CPF pays a flat contribution, unless they are a jobseeker, the employer tops up the training, or they use their occupational prevention account or a work-accident top-up. In the example, the 1,000 employer top-up waives it. The tool never adds it: without a top-up, the displayed out-of-pocket (1,700) does not include it.
Limits
Current salary and timing (during or outside working hours) are displayed but not used in the calculation. The 0.76 ratio is an approximation; actual net pay depends on status and withholding rate. This is an indicative estimate, not a substitute for a career adviser.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the mandatory CPF contribution in 2026?
150 for any training request made from 2 April 2026 (French Decree No. 2026-234 of 30 March 2026), compared with 103.20 before. Jobseekers are exempt, as are employees whose employer tops up the training. The calculator does not add this amount, so plan for it if no exemption applies.
How much is credited to the CPF each year?
500 per year of work for an employee, up to a ceiling of 5,000. An employee without a CAP, BEP or level-3 vocational qualification receives 800 a year, up to 8,000. The tool's CPF balance field ranges from 0 to 8,000 to cover both ceilings.
How does the tool estimate the net value of a raise?
It keeps 76% of the gross raise, a fixed ratio meant to cover contributions and income tax: 350 gross becomes 266 net a month, or 3,192 a year. The real figure depends on your status (executive or not) and your withholding rate.
How quickly does CPF-funded training pay for itself?
The tool divides the out-of-pocket cost by the net monthly gain. With 700 to pay and 266 more net per month, payback takes 2.6 months. Without an employer top-up, the out-of-pocket rises to 1,700 and payback to 6.4 months, excluding the flat contribution.
