How to calculate book reading time: formula and example
Reading time equals the book’s word count (pages × words per page) divided by your speed in words per minute (WPM). A 380-page novel at 275 words per page, read at 220 WPM, takes about 475 minutes, or 7.9 hours.

With 275 words per page, the calculator default. 220 words per minute is a steady pace, 300 a fast one.
The formula
Total time (min) = pages × words per page ÷ speed (WPM). The tool also derives minutes per page (words per page ÷ WPM) and pages read per minute.
Worked example
With the default values: 380 pages × 275 words = 104,500 words. At 220 WPM that is 475 minutes (7.9 h), or 1.3 minutes per page.
- “I read X minutes a day” mode: at 25 minutes a day you need 475 ÷ 25 = 19 days (rounded up), about 20 pages a day. At that pace the tool projects 365 × 25 ÷ 475 = 19.2 similar books a year.
- “Finish in X days” mode: to finish in 14 days you need about 34 minutes and 27.1 pages a day.
- Audiobook: assuming a narrator at 150 words per minute, 104,500 words last 11.6 h at normal speed, 9.3 h at 1.25x and 7.7 h at 1.5x.
Built-in speed test
The timer counts whole seconds while you read the sample text. Speed = words in the text ÷ seconds × 60, capped between 80 and 800 WPM. The sample has a different word count in each language, so compare a result only with your own earlier runs.
Limits
The finish date starts today and assumes reading every day. Words per page vary a lot with format and layout. The presets (150, 220, 320, 450 WPM) are rough benchmarks, and the 150 WPM audiobook rate is an indicative value, not verified.
