Game Download Time Calculator: Steam, PS5, Xbox and PC

A 100 GB game takes about 50 min on a 300 Mbps line (10% overhead included). Work out the download time on Steam, PS5, Xbox or PC.

Game download time from your connection speed: the formula

Download time equals size in megabits ÷ speed in Mbps, since one byte is 8 bits: a 300 Mbps line moves at best 37.5 MB/s. The tool counts 1 GB = 8,192 Mb and adds a 10% margin, which gives 42 min 33 s for an 85 GB game on 300 Mbps fibre.

The tool's formula

  • Data to transfer (Mb) = game size in GB × 1,024 × 8 × 1.10. The 1.10 factor is a fixed 10% overhead (network protocol, compressed packages) and cannot be changed.
  • Duration (s) = data ÷ speed in Mbps, shown in hours, minutes and seconds (rounded down).
  • Theoretical transfer rate (MB/s) = speed ÷ 8, the figure launchers such as Steam display while downloading.

Worked examples

An 85 GB game on 300 Mbps fibre: 85 × 8,192 × 1.10 = 765,952 Mb, divided by 300 = 2,553 s, or 42 min 33 s at 37.5 MB/s. Without the 10% margin it would take 38 min 41 s. A 150 GB game on 1 Gbps fibre takes 22 min 31 s; on 50 Mbps VDSL, 7 h 30 min 33 s. A 15 GB patch on 15 Mbps ADSL takes 2 h 30 min 11 s.

Assumptions and limits

  • Enter your measured speed, not the advertised plan speed. Over Wi-Fi it is often far lower than over Ethernet.
  • The tool counts 1 GB = 1,024 MB. If the store lists sizes in 1,000 MB units, the real time is about 2.4% shorter.
  • Platform servers, evening congestion and on-disk decompression (often limited by the CPU or a hard drive) can stretch the time well beyond 10%.
  • The shortcut sizes (Call of Duty, Baldur's Gate 3, Cyberpunk 2077…) are rough figures that change with each update; the GTA 6 size is an estimate, as no official size has been published. Check the exact size on the game's store page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to download 100 GB on fibre?

On 1 Gbps fibre, 100 GB take about 15 minutes according to the tool (10% margin included). On 300 Mbps, allow about 50 minutes, and about 5 hours on a real 50 Mbps connection.

Why does Steam show MB/s instead of Mbps?

Steam and consoles show speed in megabytes per second, internet providers in megabits per second. Divide by 8: a 300 Mbps line gives at best 37.5 MB/s.

Why is my download slower than the estimate?

The calculation assumes your full bandwidth is available. Wi-Fi, other devices at home, busy servers in the evening and decompression on a slow drive all cut the real speed, sometimes by half.

Is a GB 1,000 or 1,024 MB?

Both conventions exist: 1 GB = 1,000 MB in decimal units, 1,024 MB (strictly a GiB) in many programs. The tool uses 1,024 MB, which lengthens the estimate by about 2.4% compared with the decimal convention.

Is this tool really free?

Yes, all tools on Kristools are 100% free and accessible without registration.

Is my data protected?

Yes. All processing is performed directly and securely inside your browser. No personal data is sent to our servers.
