How shiny odds are calculated

Each encounter gets one or more shiny rolls, each with a 1 in 4,096 chance since Generation VI (1 in 8,192 before). The Shiny Charm, the Masuda method, chains and mass outbreaks add rolls. At 1 in 4,096 you need 2,839 encounters for an even chance of seeing one.

The formula

With r rolls per encounter and a base rate of 1 in B, an encounter is shiny with probability p = 1 − (1 − 1/B)^r. Over n encounters, the chance of at least one shiny is 1 − (1 − p)^n, and reaching probability q takes ln(1 − q) / ln(1 − p) encounters, rounded up.

Example in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

Shiny Charm (+2 rolls), mass outbreak after 60 defeated (+2) and a level 3 Sparkling Power sandwich (+3): 8 rolls. p = 1 − (4,095/4,096)^8, or 1 in 512.44. Over 1,000 encounters: 1 − (1 − p)^1,000 = 85.8%. You need 355 encounters for 50%, 1,179 for 90% and 2,358 for 99%.

Base rates and the Shiny Charm

  • Red, Blue and Yellow: no shinies, they arrived in Gold and Silver.
  • Generations II to V: 1 in 8,192; from X and Y: 1 in 4,096.
  • Shiny Charm: +2 rolls from Black 2 and White 2 to Scarlet and Violet, +3 in Legends: Arceus and Legends: Z-A; in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl it only affects eggs.
  • Masuda method: 6 rolls, 8 with the Shiny Charm (1 in 512 since Generation VI).

The tool uses game data analysed by dataminers and published by Bulbapedia (Shiny Pokémon), Bulbapedia (Masuda method), Serebii (Legends: Z-A) and Serebii (Sword and Shield), checked on October 23, 2026. You hatch an egg from two parents from games in different languages. Since Generation VI the egg gets 6 rolls (1 in 683) and 8 with the Shiny Charm (1 in 512); in Generation IV it was 5 rolls on a 1 in 8,192 base.

What are the shiny odds in Pokémon GO?

Niantic does not publish them. The community estimates about 1 in 512 for most species, according to Bulbapedia; for a Community Day or a raid, enter your own rate in the custom field.
