Nether Portal Calculator: Minecraft Overworld Coordinates

Divide X and Z by 8 to go from the Overworld to the Nether, multiply them by 8 on the way back; Y stays the same. Link your portals without mistakes.

Nether / Overworld coordinates in Minecraft: the 1:8 calculation

One block travelled in the Nether equals 8 in the Overworld, on the X and Z axes only. From Overworld to Nether, the tool divides X and Z by 8 and rounds down, as the game does; the other way, it multiplies by 8. The Y height is copied unchanged.

Formulas used

  • Overworld → Nether: (floor(X ÷ 8), Y, floor(Z ÷ 8)).
  • Nether → Overworld: (X × 8, Y, Z × 8).

Floor means rounding down, negative values included: −1,601 ÷ 8 = −200.125 becomes −201, not −200. This is the method the official Minecraft Wiki describes.

Example: an Overworld portal at X = 800, Y = 64, Z = −1,600 matches X = 100, Y = 64, Z = −200 in the Nether. The tool also shows the command /tp @p 100 64 -200 to check the spot in creative mode. Building the Nether portal at these exact coordinates stops it linking to a nearby portal.

What the tool does not do

  • Y is not limited to the Nether's height: 200 from the Overworld stays 200, although the Nether has a bedrock ceiling around Y = 128. Pick a reachable height yourself.
  • The search radius is not modelled. In Java Edition a portal looks for an existing exit within a 32 × 32 area in the Nether and 256 × 256 in the Overworld; in Bedrock Edition the radius is 128 blocks in both dimensions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you convert Overworld coordinates to the Nether?

Divide X and Z by 8 and round down; keep Y. A portal at 800 / 64 / −1,600 in the Overworld matches 100 / 64 / −200 in the Nether.

Should the Y coordinate be divided by 8?

No, the 1:8 ratio only applies to the horizontal X and Z axes. Y stays the same, but the Nether has a bedrock ceiling around Y = 128, so adjust the height if your Overworld portal sits higher.

Why does my Nether portal send me to the wrong place?

The game links a portal to the nearest existing portal within its search area: a 16-block radius in the Nether and 128 in the Overworld in Java Edition, 128 blocks in both dimensions in Bedrock. Build each portal at the exact calculated coordinates to avoid crossed links.

How are negative coordinates rounded for the Nether?

The game always rounds down: −1,601 ÷ 8 = −200.125 gives −201, not −200. The tool applies the same floor rule.
