How many clothes to pack for a trip: the counting rule

The tool plans one set of underwear, one pair of socks and one top per day plus a spare, and one pair of trousers per 2.5 days. For 7 days without laundry that makes 8 of each and 3 trousers; with laundry on site the list is capped at 4 days, so 5 of each and 2 trousers.

The rules applied

  • Days counted = trip length (1 to 60 days), or at most 4 days if you can do laundry on site.
  • Underwear, socks and tops = days + 1; trousers, jeans or shorts = days ÷ 2.5 rounded up (at least 1). Everything is doubled for a couple.
  • Context extras: coat, hat-scarf-gloves and 2 thermal base layers per person in cold climates; 2 swimsuits, sunglasses and sandals for hot climates or beach trips; rain jacket and hiking boots for hiking; 2 formal outfits and dress shoes for business trips.
  • Fixed sections: toiletries, electronics (chargers, power bank in the cabin, plug adapter), documents and money, first-aid kit. You can tick items off and add your own.

Worked examples

A 7-day city trip without laundry, alone: 8 sets of underwear, 8 pairs of socks, 8 tops, 3 trousers. Two weeks with laundry: 5, 5, 5 and 2, the same as a 4-day trip. A couple travelling for 10 days without laundry: 22 of each and 8 trousers in total.

Limits

  • The “tropical” climate adds no specific items; choose the beach trip type to get swimwear and sun protection.
  • The list ignores the weight and size of your case: check your airline's limits.

Sources and dates: the tool's reminder on cabin liquids (containers of 100 ml at most in a resealable transparent bag of up to one litre, medicines and baby food excepted) matches the EU page Your Europe: luggage restrictions (last checked by the EU on 16/06/2026). Some airports with newer scanners apply different rules, so check with your departure airport (checked 14/10/2026).

Frequently Asked Questions

How many outfits do I need for a week away?

Using the tool's rule, allow one set of underwear, one pair of socks and one top per day plus a spare, so 8 of each for 7 days, plus 3 trousers or shorts. With a washing machine on site, 5 of each are enough.

Can I take shampoo in my cabin bag?

Yes, in containers of 100 ml or less, all packed in a resealable transparent bag of up to one litre. Larger bottles go in the hold; medicines and baby food are exempt from the limit.

Does a power bank have to travel in the cabin?

Yes: lithium power banks are banned from checked baggage and must stay with you in the cabin, which is why the list says so. Airlines also cap their capacity, so check your carrier's rule.

What should I pack for a business trip?

On top of the daily basics, the tool adds 2 formal outfits (shirts, suit) and one pair of dress shoes per person. Documents, chargers and the plug adapter are in the fixed sections.
