A bridge day appears when a public holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday: taking the Monday or Friday off gives you 4 days of rest for 1 day of leave. In the United States, 2026 has two: Thursday 1 January and Thanksgiving, which always falls on a Thursday (26 November).

Example: the United States in 2026

The year has 11 federal holidays. Two give a bridge day: New Year's Day on Thursday 1 January (take Friday 2 January off) and Thanksgiving on Thursday 26 November (take Friday 27 November off). On 15 October 2026 the next holiday is Veterans Day, Wednesday 11 November, 27 days away; after Christmas the countdown moves to the following 1 January.

Movable feasts

Easter is computed with Meeus's Gregorian algorithm: Easter Sunday 2026 is 5 April. Good Friday comes 2 days before, Easter Monday 1 day after. US holidays such as Memorial Day follow weekday rules (last Monday in May).

Brazil and Italy

Brazil has 10 national holidays, set each year by a portaria of the Ministry of Management: in 2026, 9 fall on a weekday and two bridge days are possible, Friday 2 January and Monday 20 April before Tiradentes. Carnival and Corpus Christi are only optional days (pontos facultativos). Italy has 12 national holidays since 4 October, the feast of St Francis of Assisi, became a holiday again in 2026; that year, 5 of them fall on a Saturday or Sunday.
