Holidays, moon phases and seasons: how the calendar works

The calendar shows the 11 US federal holidays. Six of them move from year to year because they follow a weekday rule, such as Memorial Day on the last Monday of May and Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November. In 2026 Memorial Day is Monday 25 May and Thanksgiving is Thursday 26 November.

Public holidays

Five federal holidays have fixed dates (New Year’s Day 1 January, Juneteenth 19 June, Independence Day 4 July, Veterans Day 11 November, Christmas Day 25 December). The other six follow a weekday rule: Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Presidents’ Day = third Monday of January and of February, Memorial Day = last Monday of May, Labor Day = first Monday of September, Columbus Day = second Monday of October and Thanksgiving = fourth Thursday of November. In 2026 they fall on 19 January, 16 February, 25 May, 7 September, 12 October and 26 November. Ten of the 11 holidays fall on a weekday in 2026: Independence Day is on Saturday 4 July, and the federal day off moves to Friday 3 July, a substitute day the calendar does not mark.

For the other countries the tool shows the national public holidays: 11 in France, 8 in England and Wales, 9 common to all German states, 10 in Spain, 10 in Brazil and 12 in Italy. Holidays tied to Easter, such as Good Friday or Easter Monday, are computed with the standard Gregorian algorithm (golden number, epact, weekday); in 2026 Easter falls on 5 April. State and regional holidays and substitute days for holidays falling on a weekend are not shown.

Moon phases

The tool converts the date to a Julian day, counts the days since a reference new moon (6 January 2000) and divides by the mean lunar month of 29.53 days. The fractional part is the phase: 0 for new moon, 0.5 for full moon. This mean cycle puts the October 2026 new moon on the 10th or 11th; allow about one day of error.

Seasons and other calendars

Seasons use fixed Northern Hemisphere dates (20 March, 21 June, 22 September, 21 December), while real equinoxes and solstices shift by a day from year to year. Chinese and Islamic dates come from your browser’s Intl date engine; the Islamic date is calculated and can differ by a day from crescent sighting. Weeks start on Monday and no week numbers are shown.
