Stopwatch and Countdown Timer to the Hundredth

Start a stopwatch accurate to the hundredth of a second or set a countdown timer that shows the time left.

Online stopwatch and countdown timer: accuracy and how it works

The stopwatch measures elapsed time as the difference between the device clock at start and the current time, shown to the hundredth of a second. The countdown timer sets an end time and shows the remaining time rounded up to the next second. Moving the tab to the background slows the display, not the measurement.

Stopwatch

  • Measurement: elapsed time = current time − start time (device clock, in milliseconds). Pausing stores the time so far and resuming continues from there.
  • Display: minutes:seconds.hundredths, refreshed every 10 ms. Minutes keep counting past 59 (1 h 15 shows as 75:00.00).
  • Laps: each press records the cumulative time; the gap to the previous lap is shown in seconds to two decimals.

Countdown timer

  • Duration set in hours, minutes (0-59) and seconds (0-59), 5 minutes by default.
  • On start the tool sets the end time = now + duration and checks the remaining time every 100 ms. The display rounds up to the next second: with 4 min 59.2 s left it still reads 05:00.
  • At zero a visual message flashes; no sound is played.

Example

Lap 1 at 1:02.35 and lap 2 at 2:01.10: the gap shown is 121.10 − 62.35 = +58.75 s.

Limits

Because timing relies on the system clock, an automatic clock correction during a run shifts the result by the same amount. In a background tab the browser spaces out refreshes: the time stays correct, but the end of the countdown may be flagged late. Pausing the timer freezes the remaining time, and resuming carries on from there. Hundredth-of-a-second display does not make it an official timing device, which requires electronic triggering.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the stopwatch keep running if I switch tabs?

Yes. Time is calculated as the difference between the start time and the current time, so it stays correct even when the browser slows the display in the background. When you return to the tab, the value updates immediately.

How are lap times calculated?

Each lap records the cumulative time since start, and the gap to the previous lap is shown to the hundredth of a second. Laps at 1:02.35 then 2:01.10 give a gap of +58.75 s.

Does the timer ring at the end?

No, it shows a message and a flashing red background but plays no sound. Keep the tab visible if you need to notice the end of the countdown.

What is the longest duration I can set on the timer?

Minutes and seconds go from 0 to 59; the hours field has no set limit. A 1 h 30 countdown is entered as 1 hour and 30 minutes.
