Human Design chart: design moment, gates and type

A Human Design chart uses two moments: birth and the design moment, when the Sun stood 88° of longitude earlier. Each planetary position falls into one of 64 gates of 5.625°, split into 6 lines of 0.9375°, starting with gate 41 at 302° (2° Aquarius).

Method

The tool converts the birth time to UTC with the chosen time zone, then computes geocentric positions of the Sun, the Earth (Sun + 180°), the Moon, the lunar nodes and the planets from Mercury to Pluto, as tropical ecliptic longitude of date. The design moment is when the Sun was 88° behind, 86 to 93 days before birth. For each longitude, subtract 302°, divide by 5.625° for the gate's rank on the wheel, then divide the remainder by 0.9375° for the line, from 1 to 6.

Worked example

Born on 15 June 1990 at 12:00 in Paris, which is 10:00 UTC. Sun at 84.05°: (84.05 − 302 + 360) ÷ 5.625 = 25.25, so the 26th gate on the wheel, gate 12; remainder 1.425° ÷ 0.9375 = 1.52, line 2. Design moment on 16 March 1990 around 22:00 UTC, Sun at 356.05°: gate 36, line 4. Profile 2/4. Channels 2-14 and 13-33 define the Sacral, G and Throat; the Sacral motor reaches the Throat through the G: Manifesting Generator, sacral authority.

Assumptions and limits

Software differs on the lunar node (true or mean, up to 2° apart), so both are offered. One hour of error moves the Moon by about 0.55°. Time zones before 1970 depend on the browser's data. Human Design has no scientific validation: the tool performs an astronomical calculation with no predictive value. Independent tool, not affiliated with Jovian Archive.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the design moment calculated in Human Design?

It is the moment when the Sun stood 88° of longitude before its birth position. Because the Sun moves faster in January than in July, the gap is 86 to 93 days. For a birth on 15 June 1990, it falls on 16 March 1990.

How do I find my Human Design type?

Type depends on the centers defined by complete channels. Defined Sacral: Generator, or Manifesting Generator when a motor (Sacral, Solar Plexus, Heart or Root) reaches the Throat. No Sacral: Manifestor if a motor reaches the Throat, otherwise Projector. No defined center: Reflector.

What does a 2/4 profile mean?

The profile combines the line of the Personality Sun (here 2) and the line of the Design Sun (here 4). Since 88° equals 93.9 lines, the second line is always the first minus 3 or minus 4, so there are only 12 profiles, from 1/3 to 6/3.

What if I don't know my birth time?

The Moon moves about 13° a day, or 0.55° an hour, so without a time its gate and line stay uncertain, and sometimes the type too if a channel depends on it. Slow planets barely change. Compare charts calculated at 00:00 and 23:59 to see what varies.
