Birth chart without birth time: sun sign, moon sign and rising sign
With only the date of birth, the tool gives the sun sign and the moon sign, or the two possible moon signs when the Moon changes sign that day. The rising sign needs the time of birth: it is then estimated with a simplified rule (at 6 a.m. in the sun sign, then one sign further every 2 hours). Astrology has no scientific validation; the tool applies a calculation convention with no predictive value.
Without a birth time: what can still be calculated
Tick “I don't know my birth time”. The sun sign depends only on the date. For the Moon, the tool computes its position at 0:00 and at 24:00, local time of the selected place. The Moon goes round the zodiac in 27.3 days, so it changes sign about every 2.3 days and at most once in a day: this happens on about 160 days a year. If the two signs differ, the tool finds the moment of the change and shows it rounded to 5 minutes, with a 15-minute margin.
The rising sign is not calculated. It is the sign rising on the eastern horizon, and all twelve signs rise within 24 hours: it changes about every two hours on average, and in Paris Aries and Pisces take under an hour to rise, against 2 h 45 min for each sign from Leo to Scorpio. The elemental balance, which counts the ascendant for 40%, is not shown either. If the birth falls on a day when the Sun changes sign (around the 20th of each month), the Sun can also be in either sign depending on the time.
Example: 2 January 2026, place France. The Moon is in Gemini until about 2:10 p.m., then in Cancer; NASA's ephemeris gives 2:09 p.m. (13:09 UTC). On 18 May 1996 it stays in Gemini all day.
The three calculations
- Sun sign: fixed dates (Aries 21 March to 19 April, Taurus 20 April to 20 May, and so on). The actual change of sign shifts by a day from one year to the next.
- Rising sign (time known): number of 2-hour blocks elapsed since 6 a.m., added to the sun sign (modulo 12). An astrologer computes the ascendant from local sidereal time, which depends on the longitude and latitude of the birthplace; the tool ignores them, and the selected place is only used for the moon sign.
- Moon sign: the Moon's real position, computed with the 13 main terms of the lunar theory published by Jean Meeus (Astronomical Algorithms, chapter 47), at the time of birth converted to Universal Time for the selected place, daylight saving time included.
- Elements: 40 points for the Sun's element, 40 for the ascendant, 20 for the Moon.
Accuracy of the moon sign
The calculation was compared on 22 October 2026 with NASA's JPL Horizons ephemeris (DE441 model, apparent ecliptic longitude), hour by hour over five years: 1950, 1975, 1990, 2005 and 2026, i.e. 43,805 positions. The difference is 0.02° on average and 0.1° at most. Over the 802 sign changes in those years, the median difference in the calculated time is 2 minutes and the largest is 10 minutes. The sign differs for 29 positions out of 43,805, all within a few minutes of a sign change.
Example with a birth time
Born on 18 May 1996 at 2:30 p.m.: Sun in Taurus. From 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. is 8 h 30 min, i.e. 4 full 2-hour blocks: ascendant Taurus + 4 signs = Virgo. An astronomical calculation for Paris also gives a Virgo ascendant that day. For the Moon, 2:30 p.m. Paris summer time is 12:30 UTC: the tool places the Moon at 9.7° Gemini, the day after the new moon, as JPL Horizons does. For a birth on 1 January 1990 at 7 a.m., the tool gives a Capricorn ascendant where the calculation for Paris gives Sagittarius.
Saturn return calculator: how the dates are found
The Saturn return is the moment Saturn comes back to the position it held at birth. Saturn goes around the zodiac in 29.5 years, so the first return comes around age 29 and the second around 58 or 59. The tool computes Saturn's longitude at the moment of birth, then follows it day by day from age 24 to 34 and from 53 to 64. Each exact pass is refined to the minute. Because of its retrograde loops, Saturn can cross the same degree three times in less than a year; the tool then gives all three dates.
The orb is the tolerance around the natal degree. You can choose to show the periods when Saturn is within 1°, 2° or 3° of its birth position. Saturn moves 0.13° a day at most, so with a 1° orb each pass usually lasts about two weeks, longer near a station.
Example: born on May 18, 1996 at 2:30 pm in France. Saturn is at 4° 24′ Aries. The first return falls on March 22, 2026 at 23:11 UTC (JPL Horizons: March 23, 2026 at 00:50 UTC), at age 29, and Saturn stays within 1° from March 15 to March 30, 2026. The second return has three passes: April 28, 2055, October 23, 2055 and January 17, 2056.
Saturn's position comes from its mean orbital elements and five perturbation terms from Jupiter, following Paul Schlyter's method. On October 27, 2026 it was compared with the JPL Horizons ephemeris (DE441) once a week from 1930 to 2100: the difference is 0.013° on average and 0.053° at most. Over 24 return passes (births from 1945 to 2000), the median timing difference is 2 h 36 min and the largest is 1.5 days, for two passes near a station, when Saturn looks almost still.
Venus sign calculator
Your Venus sign is the sign Venus occupied at birth; astrology links it to love life and taste. Venus usually spends a little less than a month in a sign, and up to four months during a retrograde. The tool computes its geocentric position with the orbital elements of E. M. Standish (JPL): it stays within 0.05° of JPL Horizons from 1930 to 2050. Without a birth time, it compares the signs at 00:00 and 24:00 and shows both if they differ.
Example: on May 18, 1996 at 2:30 pm, Venus is in Gemini. On March 30, 2026 it moves from Aries into Taurus around 5:45 pm Paris time (JPL Horizons: 6:10 pm); without a birth time, the tool shows "Aries / Taurus".
Limits
Results are approximations: allow a margin of one sign for the ascendant, more at high latitudes. If the Moon is a few minutes from a sign change, check the moon sign in an ephemeris. The time entered is local time; daylight saving time follows the European (since 1981) and North American (since 1987) rules, so for an older birth you may need to check the legal time that day. A full chart (houses, planets) requires ephemeris software using the exact place and time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get my birth chart without a birth time?
Partly. Tick “I don't know my birth time”: the tool gives the sun sign and the moon sign. On about 160 days a year the Moon changes sign during the day; the tool then shows both signs and the time of the change, for example on 2 January 2026 in France: Gemini until about 2:10 p.m., then Cancer. The rising sign and the houses cannot be calculated without the time.
Why is the birth time needed for the rising sign?
The rising sign is the sign rising on the eastern horizon. It changes about every two hours on average, and faster for some signs: in Paris, Aries and Pisces rise in under an hour. An error of one hour in the birth time can therefore move the result into the neighbouring sign.
How does the tool calculate the rising sign?
It starts from the sun sign at 6 a.m. and moves forward one sign every 2 hours: a birth at 2:30 p.m. gives 4 signs after the sun sign, i.e. Virgo for a Sun in Taurus. This rule ignores the latitude and longitude of the birthplace, which the astronomical calculation from local sidereal time takes into account.
Is the moon sign shown reliable?
Yes, except within a few minutes of a sign change. The tool computes the Moon's real position at the time of birth, converted to Universal Time for the selected place. Compared hour by hour with NASA's JPL Horizons ephemeris over five years, it differs by 0.1° at most, which means 10 minutes at most on the time of a sign change. For 18 May 1996 at 2:30 p.m. in Paris, both place the Moon at 9.7° Gemini.
What does “lunar ascendant” mean?
The phrase often combines two separate items of the chart: the ascendant, the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the time of birth, and the moon sign, the sign the Moon is in. The tool shows them separately. The moon sign can be found from the date alone, except on days when the Moon changes sign; the ascendant needs the birth time.
On which dates does each sun sign start?
The tool uses fixed dates: Aries from 21 March, Taurus from 20 April, Gemini from 21 May, Cancer from 21 June, Leo from 23 July. Depending on the year, the Sun can enter a sign one day earlier or later.
How do I calculate my Saturn return?
You need Saturn's position at birth, then the date when Saturn comes back to it, around age 29 and again around 58. Enter your birth date: the tool gives the exact passes and the periods when Saturn is within 1, 2 or 3° of its natal position. For a birth on May 18, 1996 in France, Saturn is at 4° 24′ Aries and the first return falls on March 22, 2026 (March 23 at 00:50 UTC according to JPL Horizons). Dates are accurate to a day or two.
How do I find my Venus sign?
Your Venus sign depends on your birth date, and on the birth time only on days when Venus changes sign, about a dozen times a year. The tool computes the position of Venus to within 0.05°: on May 18, 1996, Venus is in Gemini. On March 30, 2026 it moves from Aries into Taurus around 6 pm Paris time.
