Compatibility between two signs: how the score is calculated

The score starts from the gap between the two sun signs on the zodiac wheel (trine, 4 signs apart: 95; sextile: 90; conjunction: 88; opposition: 82; square: 70; other: 68), then adjusts four pillars according to the elements present in the couple. Leo and Sagittarius, two Fire signs in trine, get 94%. It is a game based on astrological tradition, with no scientific validation.

The calculation

  1. Gap between the signs, counted the short way round (0 to 6 signs): 0 = conjunction (88), 2 = sextile (90), 3 = square (70), 4 = trine (95), 6 = opposition (82), 1 = semi-sextile (68), 5 = quincunx (68). This is the base score.
  2. Four pillars start from it: passion +6 if a Fire sign is present (−2 otherwise), communication +6 with an Air sign (−3 otherwise), emotion +6 with a Water sign (−4 otherwise), stability +6 with an Earth sign (unchanged otherwise). Each pillar is capped at 99.
  3. The overall score is the rounded average of the four pillars.

Worked examples

  • Leo and Sagittarius (Fire + Fire, trine): passion 99 (101 capped), communication 92, emotion 91, stability 95, giving 94%.
  • Taurus and Cancer (Earth + Water, sextile): 88, 87, 96, 96, giving 92%.
  • Aries and Libra (Fire + Air, opposition): 88, 88, 78, 82, giving 84%.
  • Gemini and Cancer (neighbouring signs, semi-sextile): 66, 74, 74, 68, giving 71%.

What the tool does not do

  • Only sun signs count: no birth date or time, so no rising sign, Moon, Venus or full chart. An astrologer's synastry compares the positions of every planet in both charts.
  • A given pair of signs always gets the same score, whichever way round.
  • The "chemistry" text depends on the pair of elements; the advice is generic.

Astrology has no scientific validation: the result is entertainment and says nothing about how a real relationship will turn out.

Are two people of the same sign compatible?

The tool treats two identical signs as a conjunction, with a base score of 88. Two Leos, for example, get 88%, less than a Leo-Sagittarius couple.

Why does the result differ from my birth chart?

The tool only compares sun signs, without birth date or time. A full synastry takes the rising sign, the Moon and Venus into account, which the tool ignores.

Is astrological compatibility scientifically proven?
