Cost per printed page: toner, paper and duplex printing

The cost of a laser page is toner price ÷ real yield, plus the sheet cost (ream price ÷ 500, halved for duplex). The manufacturer's yield assumes 5% coverage, so at 15% coverage a cartridge prints a third as many pages. With the default values, a black-and-white page costs €0.073 and a colour page €0.289.

Formulas used

  • Sheet cost = ream price ÷ 500.
  • Paper cost per page = duplex share × (sheet ÷ 2) + single-sided share × sheet.
  • Real yield = rated yield ÷ (selected coverage ÷ 5%), with a 100-page floor.
  • Black-and-white page = black toner ÷ real black yield + paper; colour page = colour pack ÷ real colour yield + black toner ÷ black yield + paper.

Example with the default values

2,500 pages a month, 30% in colour, 60% duplex, black toner at €65 for 3,000 pages, cyan-magenta-yellow pack at €180 for 2,500 pages, ream at €5.50, 15% office coverage (factor 3). Real yield drops to 1,000 black pages and 833 colour pages. A black-and-white page costs €0.073 and a colour page €0.289. Per month: €324.50 of toner plus 1,750 sheets, i.e. €19.25 of paper, €343.75 in total, €4,125 a year, €0.138 per page on average. Switching to 100% duplex would save €66 of paper a year.

The tool also shows A0 to A8 sizes in centimetres, inches and pixels (A4 at 300 DPI is 2,480 × 3,508 px) and the weight of one sheet: 4.99 g for A4 at 80 g/m².

Limits

  • Laser toner only; inkjet ink is not covered.
  • Consumption is assumed proportional to coverage.
  • The three colour cartridges are assumed to run out together.
  • Printer purchase or lease, drum, fuser and maintenance are not included.

Sources and dates: A-series sizes per ISO 216:2007 (derived from the German DIN 476 standard); toner cartridge yield measured under ISO/IEC 19752:2025 (monochrome) and ISO/IEC 19798:2025 (colour), on test pages of about 5% coverage per colour (checked 14/10/2026).

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "3,000 pages at 5%" mean on a toner cartridge?

It is the page count measured under ISO/IEC 19752 on a test page with about 5% ink coverage, roughly a short letter. An office page with a logo and a table is closer to 15%, so the same cartridge prints only about 1,000 pages.

How much does a colour office print cost per page?

With a €180 colour pack rated at 2,500 pages, a €65 black toner rated at 3,000 pages and 15% coverage, the tool finds €0.289 per colour page against €0.073 in black and white. The colour cost adds the colour pack, black toner and paper, nearly four times the price of a black-and-white page.

How much does duplex printing save?

Duplex halves the number of sheets, not the toner. For 2,500 pages a month with 60% already duplex and a €5.50 ream, going to 100% saves 500 sheets a month, or €66 a year.

How much does an 80 gsm A4 sheet weigh?

An A4 sheet measures 0.21 × 0.297 m, i.e. 0.0624 m²; at 80 g/m² it weighs 4.99 g. A 500-sheet ream therefore weighs about 2.5 kg.
