Meeting Airtime Equity & Speaking Time Distribution Tracker
Live stopwatch and analytics to measure speech time equity, monitor dominance, and promote psychological safety in discussions.
Meeting airtime: measuring how evenly people get to speak
The tool times each speaker and compares their share of total speaking time with the ideal share, 100% divided by the number of participants (20% for five). The balance score is 100 minus 2.2 times the standard deviation of the shares, with a floor of 10; from 70 up the discussion is shown as balanced.
How the tool counts
Click a speaker to start their timer; clicking another switches the count, clicking the same one again pauses it. Only one timer runs at a time and silences are not counted. Each person's share = their seconds ÷ total seconds × 100, rounded to one decimal.
- Dominant: a share above twice the ideal share and above 35%, i.e. over 40% with five participants.
- Barely spoke: a share below 0.35 times the ideal share (7% with five) and under one minute of speaking.
- Score: standard deviation of the shares around the ideal share, then 100 − 2.2 × standard deviation, rounded, minimum 10.
Example
Demo values: 8 min, 5 min 20 s, 4 min, 2 min and 30 s, 19 min 50 s in total. Shares: 40.3%, 26.9%, 20.2%, 10.1% and 2.5%. The standard deviation around 20% is 13.15, giving 100 − 28.9 = 71/100: the meeting is shown as balanced even though the first speaker is flagged dominant and the last one as barely speaking. The score sums up overall spread, the flags point to individuals; read both. If everyone speaks for 5 minutes the score reaches 100; if only one person speaks it falls to 12.
Limits
- The list has five preset participants that cannot be renamed or extended: with eight people the real ideal share would be 12.5%, not 20%.
- Counting is manual, with no audio detection; a missed click skews the split.
- The thresholds (35%, 70 points, 2.2 factor) are conventions of the tool, not a facilitation standard.
- Nothing is saved; the copy button produces a text report with times, shares and flags.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I measure each person's speaking time in a meeting?
Click the name of whoever starts speaking: their timer starts and the previous speaker's stops. At the end, the tool shows each person's time and share, rounded to a tenth of a percent, and can copy a text report.
What is the ideal split of speaking time?
The tool uses an equal share as its reference: 100% divided by the number of participants, i.e. 20% for the five speakers in the list. The balance score measures the distance from that equal split.
When does someone count as dominating the conversation?
The tool flags a person as dominant when their share is both more than twice the ideal share and more than 35% of total time; with five participants that means over 40%. This threshold is a convention of the tool.
How is the fairness score out of 100 calculated?
The tool takes the standard deviation of the shares around the ideal share, multiplies it by 2.2 and subtracts it from 100, with a minimum of 10. With the demo values, a standard deviation of 13.15 gives 71/100, just above the 70 threshold that shows "balanced discussion".
