Tarot birth card calculator: personality and soul cards
Work out your tarot birth cards with Mary K. Greer's method: month + day + year reduced to Major Arcana, giving your personality card and your soul card.
How to calculate your tarot birth cards
Your tarot birth cards come from adding your birth month, day and year, then the digits of the total until you reach 22 or less. For 13 April 1975: 4 + 13 + 1975 = 1992, then 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 21, the World, and 2 + 1 = 3, the Empress. This is Mary K. Greer's method.
Mary K. Greer's method
Greer described this calculation in Tarot Constellations (1987) and Who Are You in the Tarot? (2011), now Archetypal Tarot. She learned it from Angeles Arrien in 1977.
- Add month, day and year: 4 + 13 + 1975 = 1992.
- Add the digits until you reach 22 or less: 21, the personality card.
- Reduce to one digit: 3, the soul card.
Special cases
A total that lands on 1 to 9 gives a single card: 24 October 1966 gives 10 + 24 + 1966 = 2000, so 2, the High Priestess. 19 gives three cards: 19, 10 and 1. 22 is the Fool (0) and reduces to 4, the Emperor. Greer uses Rider-Waite numbering, with Strength as VIII and Justice as XI, the reverse of the Tarot de Marseille.
What the result means
The keywords are traditional associations of each card, meant for self-reflection rather than prediction.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate my tarot birth card?
Add your birth month, day and year, then the digits of the total until you reach 22 or less. For 4/13/1975: 1992, then 21 (the World), which reduces to 3, the Empress.
Why do I get two birth cards?
In Mary K. Greer's method a result from 10 to 22 gives a personality card and, reduced to one digit, a soul card. A result from 1 to 9 gives a single card.
What if I get 22?
22 is the Fool, numbered 0, and reduces to 4, the Emperor. A result of 19 gives three cards: the Sun, the Wheel of Fortune and the Magician.
Why are Strength and Justice swapped?
Greer follows Rider-Waite numbering: Strength is VIII and Justice XI. The Tarot de Marseille does the reverse, so the tool flags both cards.
