Tarot de Marseille reading: how the draw and spreads work
The tool randomly shuffles the 22 major arcana of the Tarot de Marseille, then draws 1, 3 or 5 cards depending on the spread: yes/no, past-present-future or cross. Each card can come out upright or reversed, and a synthesis card is found by adding up the numbers of the arcana drawn. Tarot is a divination practice with no scientific validation: the result is for entertainment and personal reflection.
The three spreads
- Yes / no: one card. Upright, the answer shown is “yes”; reversed (30% probability), it is “no”.
- Past, present, future: three cards, each reversed with a 25% probability.
- Cross: five cards (strengths, obstacles, thoughts, outcome, synthesis); the first four are reversed with a 20% probability, the fifth is always upright.
The same card cannot appear twice in one draw. Each arcanum has an upright text, a reversed text and a piece of advice.
The synthesis card
For 3- and 5-card spreads the tool adds up the numbers of the arcana (the Fool counts as 22) and, while the total exceeds 22, replaces it with the sum of its digits. Example: the Magician (1), Death (13) and the World (21) give 35, then 3 + 5 = 8, which is Justice.
Limits
Only the 22 major arcana are used, not the 56 minor arcana. The draw relies on the browser’s pseudo-random generator. The shuffle uses the Fisher-Yates algorithm: every arcanum has the same chance, 1 in 22 (4.5%), of landing in each position. The interpretations are texts written for the tool; they predict nothing and do not replace professional advice on health, money or legal decisions.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many cards of the Tarot de Marseille are used here?
The tool uses the 22 major arcana, from the Magician (I) to the World (XXI), plus the Fool, numbered 22 in calculations. The 56 minor arcana of the full 78-card deck are not included.
How does the tool answer yes or no?
It draws a single card: upright means “yes”, reversed means “no”. The chance of a reversed card is set at 30%, so the tool answers “yes” about 7 times out of 10.
How is the synthesis card chosen?
The numbers of the cards drawn are added, then the total is reduced to the sum of its digits while it exceeds 22. 1 + 13 + 21 = 35, then 3 + 5 = 8: Justice.
Is a reversed card negative?
In the tool each reversed arcanum has its own text, which usually describes a blockage or an excess of the card’s quality. Like the whole reading, it has no proven predictive value.
