How many drinks to plan for a wedding or a party?

Plan on about half a bottle of wine per adult for the meal, one bottle of champagne per 6 flutes, i.e. 1 bottle for 3 guests over a 2-hour reception, and 1 litre of water per person. For 50 adults including 45 drinkers, a full 10-hour celebration needs about 25 bottles of champagne and 34 bottles of wine, 10% margin included.

  • Wine: 169 glasses, so 34 bottles.

  • Soft drinks: 62.7 L; water: 66 L, i.e. 44 bottles of 1.5 L.

Standard drinks and moderation

A standard drink contains 10 g of pure alcohol. A 12.5 cl flute at 12% holds 1.2, a 15 cl glass of wine at 12.5% holds 1.5 and a 75 cl bottle at 12% about 7. Santé publique France, the French public health agency, advises no more than 2 standard drinks a day and 10 a week: provide appealing alcohol-free drinks and ways home. In French, the tool shows the notice « L'abus d'alcool est dangereux pour la santé » (alcohol abuse is dangerous to health), which French law requires in alcohol advertising.

Limits

Consumption varies with the guests' age, the season and the time of day: adjust the glasses per hour.
