College & High School GPA Calculator (Weighted / Unweighted)
Calculate semester and cumulative grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale with honors/AP weighting and academic honors tracking.
How to calculate a 4.0-scale GPA: grade points, credits, example
GPA is the average of each grade’s points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0…) weighted by course credits: GPA = Σ (points × credits) ÷ Σ credits. A 15-credit semester totalling 56 grade points gives a 3.73 GPA.
Scale used by the tool
| Letter | Points | Letter | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ / A | 4.0 | C+ | 2.3 |
| A− | 3.7 | C | 2.0 |
| B+ | 3.3 | C− | 1.7 |
| B | 3.0 | D+ / D | 1.3 / 1.0 |
| B− | 2.7 | F | 0 |
This is the most common US plus/minus scale, but each school sets its own: some give 4.3 for an A+, others have a D−. Check your institution’s scale.
Example (defaults)
A (3 credits) + B+ (4) + A− (4) + A (3) + A (1): 4.0 × 3 + 3.3 × 4 + 3.7 × 4 + 4.0 × 3 + 4.0 × 1 = 56 points over 15 credits, so 3.73.
Weighted GPA
The tool adds 0.5 to Honors courses and 1.0 to AP (or IB) courses, capped at 5.0. In the example the B+ is AP (4.3) and the A− Honors (4.2): 62 points ÷ 15 = 4.13. Weighting is a US high-school convention; colleges often recompute an unweighted GPA.
Cumulative GPA and honors
With a prior 3.65 GPA over 45 credits: (3.65 × 45 + 56) ÷ 60 = 3.67, using the unweighted GPA. The tool shows Latin honors from 3.5 (cum laude), 3.7 (magna) and 3.9 (summa), indicative thresholds that vary by university; below that it shows “good standing” whatever the GPA, although that status usually requires a school-set minimum (often 2.0).
This is an estimate: only your school’s official transcript counts.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a B+ worth in GPA?
On the 4.0 scale used by the tool, a B+ is worth 3.3 points, a B 3.0 and a B− 2.7. Some schools use their own scale, so check your institution’s rules.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA tops out at 4.0. Weighted GPA adds a bonus for advanced courses: +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP or IB in the tool, up to 5.0. An A in an AP course therefore counts as 5.0.
How do I calculate my cumulative GPA?
Multiply your previous GPA by the credits already earned, add this semester’s grade points, then divide by total credits. With 3.65 over 45 credits and 56 points over 15 credits: (164.25 + 56) ÷ 60 = 3.67.
What GPA do you need for cum laude?
The tool uses 3.5 for cum laude, 3.7 for magna cum laude and 3.9 for summa cum laude. These thresholds are common, but each university sets its own, sometimes as a percentage of the graduating class.
